Mary has been active in the jewelry industry since 1982, working in retail sales, as a showroom manager for a wholesale gemstone dealer or as an appraiser, manager or buyer for fine family-owned retail jewelry stores. She established Gemologically Speaking, LLC in Albuquerque, NM in 2007, offering gemological, valuation and brokering services.
Mary earned her BA with Honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 1984 and her Graduate Gemologist (GIA) in residence in 1986. She earned her FGA with Distinction from the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A).
Mary holds the designations of an Accredited Senior Appraiser since 1996, and Master Gemologist Appraiser as well as a designation in Appraisal Review and Management by the American Society of Appraisers. She develops and teaches appraisal theory courses domestically in the US and internationally. She has served on the Board of Governors of the American Society of Appraisers an on several elected positions on the ASA Gems and Jewelry discipline committee including Chair. She is an AQB Certified USPAP Instructor and an International Member of the Jewellery Valuers Association.
Gemologically Speaking, LLC is an independent appraisal firm experienced in providing accurate, defensible, evidence-based valuations of gems, diamonds, watches and jewelry of every period from the late Georgian period (late 1700’s) forward. Serving the local, regional and national US markets since 2007, we provide appraisals intended to be used for estate tax computation, non-cash charitable contribution, gift tax computation, equitable distribution of an estate or trust, post-loss insurance claim settlement, equitable distribution of a marital estate, liquidation, resale and scheduling insurance coverage. We work with attorneys in litigation situations, including the Attorney General’s Office of the State of New Mexico, and with trust officers, accountants and other fiduciaries.
Gemologically Speaking, LLC maintains Accredited Gemologists Association Certified Gem Lab #28 on the premises and works closely with industry colleagues to find answers if specialized expertise or equipment is necessary for an assignment. We do whatever is necessary to find credible answers for our clients’ valuation or identification needs.
Appraisal reports are provided in pdf format and hard copies are available for purchase when requested. Appraisals are developed and reported in compliance with the Uniform Standards of Appraisal Practice.
