Watches can be very complex

Watches are not jewellery, regardless of whether they are made from gold or set with diamonds. They require a different set of skills, knowledge, and experience in order to arrive at an appropriate valuation. I have worked in the watch industry for almost 30 years covering retail, watch auctions and the pre-owned market and in that time, I have assessed and valued thousands of watches across a broad spectrum of price, rarity, and condition. I write about watches and watch culture for both print and online magazines and I am the author and presenter of the ‘Fakes, Franken & Custom’ watch course at the Birmingham Assay Office. My experience of a vast range of watch brands and knowledge both of the brands’ histories and the current state of the market allows me to identify your watches correctly and position their value appropriately.

The Valuation Journey

The valuation journey begins with an email or telephone conversation where we will discuss what watches you have and the purpose of the valuation. We will also consider what paperwork exists for the watches and whether the watches may need to be opened to verify the movement or serial numbers. Advice and assistance can be provided with regards to appropriate routes of post-loss replacement and the values that go with them, be it ‘New Replacement’, ‘New for Old’, ‘Second-Hand Replacement’ or ‘Agreed Value’. I provide a visiting service to your home or office where full details of the watches will be recorded along with detailed high-resolution photographs, taken using a portable photographic studio. Once back at my office, the necessary research will be carried out and a valuation document produced both in electronic form, to send on to your insurer, and as a bound hard copy. The watch market can be volatile and so re-valuations are recommended every three years to ensure that your level of cover is up to date.
